Grizzlies yet to play best ball
By Benn Farrell
Although there have been moments of what the ThunderRidge boys should be, the Grizzlies have yet to put their best game on the floor.
ThunderRidge High School boys hoops went 2-3 in the Continental League Jan. 28 at the school in Highlands Ranch after a 67-49 win over Ponderosa.
“Right now, we’re not playing like we are in practice,” the team’s top scorer, Dave Day, said. “In practice, we’re sharing the ball together. We’re moving the ball better. If we can play in games like we do in practice, then we’re a much better team. Right now, we’re not doing that.”
However, against the Mustangs, ThunderRidge’s offensive game was exemplary of what they are more capable of on the Continental court.
“We started sharing the ball a lot, and we started moving unlike we were before,” Day said. “But I still think we could do it more. Sometimes we still take selfish shots and stuff like that, but were getting there, and well find it.”
Josh Heikkila, presently the team’s leading rebounder, and Jordan Grace have also been putting up numbers on the scoreboard. They are also serving as the team’s threats outside the arc.
But it’s inside were T-Ridge boys try to make their mark. Day said it could be something that ends up defining the team by the end of the season.
“That’s we’re we look to score first,” the 6-foot-7 inch senior said. “Defense is always a big part of ThunderRidge. That’s what we take to heart.”
Day scored 22 points against Ponderosa. Heikkla scored 13, and Ryan Pagnotta had 11.
With Continental losses against Rangeview, Gateway and Chaparral, the Grizzlies put up a 71-33 win over Douglas County. Day finished with 17 points against the Huskies. Ryan Arnold had 12 points in that game.
