Free prescription cards help save money
By Ashley Dieterle
Residents of Elizabeth will soon have an opportunity to benefit from more affordable prescription drugs.
The Town of Elizabeth is making free prescription drug discount cards available to all residents of Elizabeth on Dec. 5 through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities.
On Dec. 5 or any time after, residents can simply stop by Elizabeth Town Hall to receive their free card. The only requirement is proof of residency in Elizabeth. Town Administrator Chris La May said the average discount is 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. The card has no restrictions based on the resident’s age, income level or existing health coverage and can be used during the purchase of prescription drugs at Safeway and Walmart pharmacies in Elizabeth as well as more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies across the country.
“Not only does the NLC prescription discount card help residents save money on their medications, it is easy to use,” La May said. “The Town of Elizabeth residents only have to show their card when purchasing medication at one of the many participating pharmacies. There is no enrollment form required to get a card, no membership fee of any kind and town residents and their family members can use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.”
Elizabeth Mayor Jon Gleiforst said with the current economic climate many people are watching watch they spend and the discount card will offer significant savings on their future prescription drug purchases.
“Whether or not an individual has prescription coverage, this program can make it easier for our residents to afford the drugs they need to deal with a short-term illness or stay healthy by managing a chronic condition,” he said.
