Some stimulus funds came to Douglas County
By Robyn Lydick
Like many government checks, the stimulus package, $787 billion, is hard for the average person to grasp.
Numbers like that are often thought of as sand grains or drops in the ocean.
Even harder is finding where that money went, and how it helped.
In Douglas County, tracking how much came into county, school district and company coffers is confusing as the federal government’s own Web site has the disbursements listed in several ways.
More money spent in the county came through government agencies like Colorado Department of Transportation.
At the county level, $435,000 has gone to three departments. The community development block grant program received $215,625 for two projects, some to upgrade various water systems in the county and the rest for a first-time home buyers’ program.
Human Services will disburse about $69,000 to Arapahoe Douglas Mental Health for job training, with an additional $12,000 going to a contract with Dovetail Solutions for training.
The sheriff’s office will get $36,818 for a part-time victims’ assistance employee.
The rest, $119,160 is a justice assistance grant, and is the only part of the funds that is new money. The rest is reimbursement money, said Connie Pipes of the county finance office.
Highway projects totaled $89.1 million between nine projects, mostly along Colorado 470 and U.S. Highway 85.
