Holiday tree lights set to go on
By Tom Munds
A brief ceremony will be held and light refreshments will be available at 6 p.m. Nov. 23 as city officials throw the switch, illuminating almost 16,000 lights on the ornament-laden 30-foot tall Christmas tree in front of the civic center.
The low-key event is a change from recent years when there was an event called Englewood Shines that included Santa’s arrival in town on light rail along with the holiday tree lighting festivities that included choir music and a fireworks display.
Unfortunately, those elements of the tree lighting celebration fell victim to the soft economy and budget cuts.
However, Englewood does continue some of its holiday traditions, including the annual breakfast with Santa. This year’s event will be held Dec. 12. As always, the event will be held at the Malley Senior Recreation Center and there will be breakfast seatings at 8 a.m. and at 9 a.m.
There are all-you-can-eat pancakes and breakfast is eaten to holiday music. The cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children and children’s tickets include breakfast and the opportunity for the child to get a gift bag and have his or her picture taken with Santa.
