Fielder and Pyle coming together

Photographer John Fielder and musician Chuck Pyle are bringing together sights and sounds of Colorado’s Ranches and other bits of Western life in a presentation Dec. 15.

The artists will be presenting and performing at the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts, the proceeds from which will benefit the Palmer Lake Historical Society.

Fielder will present slides and information pertaining to his latest book, “Ranches of Colorado.”

The photographer has been capturing the natural beauty of public lands for 35 years and said he has come to recognize the connectedness between private and public lands.

“Nature knows no political bounds and is better off without them,” he said. The state is losing many of its working ranches to development.

“Three years ago I decided to point my camera in the direction of 50 of Colorado’s most beautiful working ranches,” Fielder said.

From the foothills to the plains and over on the Western Slope, Fielder traveled the state to capture his subjects.

Near the Tri-Lakes area, he photographed the Dakan Ranch just south of Perry Park off Colo. 105. The land, featuring extraordinary red and white sandstone, has been a working ranch since at least the 1880, he said.

Fielder also photographed a ranch, found along the banks of Fountain Creek, southeast of Colorado Springs.

For the presentation Dec. 15, Fielder will tell stories about parts of his project and plans to let other slides run with Pyle’s accompaniment.

This will not be the first time the artists have worked together. Pyle and Fielder did a similar event a couple years ago for an event that sold out, with more than 275 people attending, Pyle said.

While the event the two did together for Fielder’s book “Mountain Ranges of Colorado” went well, Fielder said this presentation will be more symbiotic because his book is about ranches and Pyle is the zen cowboy.

“John always has something that is time appropriate,” Pyle said. He added with the present state of ranches in Colorado, it is a good time to look at what is happening with the pieces of land.

Pyle will play songs that complement Fielder’s work, including some from the albums “Endless Sky” and “Higher Ground: Songs of Colorado.” Pyle said he is nearly finished with his latest project, but is not sure whether it will be done in time for the event.

He said one of the songs he will perform, “Over the San Luis” is about riding in a glider. A lyric from the song was presented to the commander of the 94th glider squadron last summer.

The zen cowboy has been living in Palmer Lake since the 1980s and travels the country with his music.

“I think we will put together an entertaining performance,” Fielder said.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for a 7 p.m. show Dec. 15. Fielder will be selling and signing items, including books, from which 30 percent of the proceeds will go to the Palmer Lake Historical Society, when doors open.

Tickets are $15, available in Monument at Covered Treasures Bookstore, 719-481-2665, and in Palmer Lake at The Wine Seller, 719-481-3019, and the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts, 719-481-0475. Tickets will also be available at the door. The center is located at 304 Colo. 105 in Palmer Lake.
