Lighting contest entries due soon

Along with cooking the turkey with all the trimmings, Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season and time to pull out the decorations and hopefully to fill out a form to be part of the annual Englewood Holiday Decorating Event.

Entry forms became available Nov. 8 at the Englewood Civic Center, library, recreation center and the Malley Senior Recreation Center. The form is also available on line. Go to the city’s Web page at www.englewoodgov.org, click on boards and commissions, then click on the Keep Englewood Beautiful Commission’s page where the forms are available.

All entry forms must be returned by Dec. 2 to the Keep Englewood Beautiful Commission. They can be mailed to the commission in care of the City of Englewood, 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood 80110.

This is the 22nd year the Keep Englewood Beautiful has sponsored the contest with lighting entries judged on artistic effect, craftsmanship and originality.

Residents and businesses entering the contest are asked to have the decorations displayed from Dec. 1 to Jan. 5. The judging will be done Dec. 8 and the award categories include Mayor’s Choice, Lifetime Holiday Spirit, Judges’ Choice and Honorable Mention. The winners will receive ribbons plus yard signs acknowledging the award. The awards will be presented and the winners recognized at the Dec. 21 Englewood City Council meeting

Englewood had a lighting contest in the1950s and ’60s but it sort of died out. Two decades ago, the Keep Englewood Beautiful Commission stepped up and sponsored the contest as an annual event.

“There was a time when putting up holiday decorations was a big deal from just about everyone in Englewood,” longtime resident John Hawkins said. “There was a contest years ago but that wasn’t as important as just lighting up the neighborhoods. Then, the trend kinda died out and you only saw a few lights around. I was glad to see the city urge people to decorate for the holidays and I think I’ve seen more homes lit up since they renewed the contest. I keep hoping more and more people would put up lights whether or not they enter the contest.”
