Record number of voters for election
By Michele Sample
As of the end of the business day Nov. 2, Douglas County had received 37,332 ballots, the highest number of people ever to vote in a school board election in Douglas County.
In 2007, votes totaled a little over 26,000.
In 2005, votes totaled a little over 31,000, and this was the year Referendum C was also on the ballot
In 2003, votes totaled a little over 26,000.
Wendy Holmes, public information officer for Douglas County, said that another 7,000 to 10,000 ballots should be received Nov. 3.
“This will be a huge record turn-out for a school board election with no other issues from the State on the ballot,” Holmes said. “That would be about a 20 to 25 percent return.”
This is an all-mail ballot election in Douglas County, with over 176,000 ballots mailed. The ballots were mailed to all active registered voters and all active failed-to-vote, in the 2008 election, registered voters.
At 7:30 p.m., Nov. 3, Douglas County will post the results on their Web site www.douglasvotes.com.
