Pioneers head to playoffs poised

It was a lose one, win one kind of week for Cripple Creek-Victor in volleyball.

Although the 3-2 loss to South Park on Oct. 21 was far from the biggest sting the Pioneers felt that night.

Sarah Burke, who has been one of the most steady players all year for CCV, went out with a knee injury toward the end of the first set and will not be back for the playoffs.

Yet instead of getting down, the Pioneers used the setback as a rallying point, fighting back for a 3-1 victory Oct. 24 at Fountain Valley to conclude the regular season with a 12-6 record.

The Pioneers took the first two sets at Fountain 25-21 and then fell 29-27 before rallying 25-16 for the win in the fourth.

“It felt like a playoff game,” coach Amy Christison said. “Their gym was pretty loud and it was high energy all four games of the match. It’s huge just to see the confidence right now.”

The girls are hoping some of that newfound confidence will transfer over into the playoffs, but it will not be easy as the team was set to open at Hoehne (17-2) on Oct. 27, a squad they lost to 3-1 earlier this year, falling 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 25-12 on Sept. 19.

“Losing a player like Sarah could really have a huge impact on us, but they have really stepped it up and pulled together as a team and played really well,” Christison said. “Maddie [Koenig] is playing great defense and Jaime Jarnot has stepped it up and is playing outside hitter where Sydni [Riley] was playing and she has been playing really smart.”

Riley has slipped over to the center spot that Burke had been playing and Christison said she has been coming on very strong.

“In the first game against Fountain Haili [Roundy] and Sydni had some huge blocks and it took them right out of their offense,” Christison said.

Riley led the team in kills with eight against South Park and then with 11 against Fountain Valley, and she has been amongst the leaders in blocks as well as Kelly Rogers has gotten in on the action with her and Roundy.

Brittany Encinias also had a big week, recording 16 digs against the Burros and 11 on Oct. 24. Koening also picked up 11 digs against Fountain.

“It’s a new season right now so we have to win to keep playing,” Christison said. “Hoehne is always tough, and always plays well at home, but I’ve got players saying ‘I don’t know if Hoehne knows what is coming after them.”

If the team was successful on the road their playoff quest will continue Oct. 29 at Fowler (19-0) with a trip to regional play on the line.
