New shops open in town

Published: 10.23.09
Once the cold weather begins, it may seem that a lot of things slow down. But there are some things in town definitely in turbo mode.

Overall, sales tax revenue isn’t anything to write home about, but I am happy to report that several new businesses have opened or will soon open in Castle Rock. Castle Rock is still a good place to do business.

One of the bigger projects on the horizon is Sprouts, which will be in the former Linens N Things space off of Founders Parkway. Sprouts pulled the required permits and expects to open in February.

Just down the street comes another option to buy your groceries. Vitamin Cottage could open before the end of the year. We don’t have firm opening dates, but I’ll keep you updated in this monthly column.

A few shops also are expanding at the Outlets at Castle Rock, in time for holiday shopping. Both Book Warehouse and Dress Barn are enlarging their stores.

And several new shops have opened downtown. Sassy Sisters Clothing opened at the corner of Wilcox and Third streets. Scoreboard Pizza has opened in the shopping center beside the Philip S. Library. Stash, The Ruffled Nest and Bling! have new locations downtown, as well.

On the other side of I-25, the Sears appliance store has opened on Park Street.

Town council also is in high gear for the 2010 budget. When the draft budget comes before council for its first reading Nov. 17, I expect it to include cuts to public transit and increases in some recreation center fees.

Like you, the town isn’t immune to the declining economy and less revenue means the town must have fewer expenditures. Pretty simple math. I invite you to come to that meeting to hear more about the budget, and to give council your opinions on it.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St. You can take a look at the draft budget now. Go to www.CRgov.com and click on 2010 Proposed Budget in the left-side menu.

For the last few months, I’ve been writing about Rock Your Dollar and Rock Your Renovation. Both programs now have ended, and both were big successes.

Rock Your Renovation provided 289 free building permits — a value of $125,000 — for many home improvement projects. Rock Your Dollar rewarded people for shopping in Castle Rock. For $500 in qualified spending in the month of September, shoppers earned a $50 debit card.

More than 2,900 debit cards — total value of $148,500 — were given out to shoppers who collectively spent more than $1.5 million at Castle Rock businesses to qualify for the program. For those who participated in the program, please remember that those debit cards expire Oct. 31. Don’t let your card expire before using its entire balance.

Just because the temperatures are dropping, Castle Rock still offers several fun special events. The one you need to put on your calendar first is Trick or Treat Street. From 2-5 p.m. Oct. 30, downtown businesses will be open for trick-or-treaters. Look for the black and orange balloons to identify which businesses are open.

Also, make sure you go to Festival Park at the corner of Perry and Second streets for the annual costume contest and pumpkin patch. There are contests for all age groups and pumpkin decorating is free. Go to www.CRgov.com or www.downtowncastlerock.com for more information.

In November is one of the town’s biggest and oldest traditions: Starlighting. The 74th annual “Lighting of the Star” on top of the Castle Rock is a community tradition that occurs the Saturday before Thanksgiving at Wilcox Square in downtown Castle Rock.

This year’s event is Nov. 21, beginning at 1 p.m. with carolers, bell ringers, musicians, hot chocolate, carriage rides, puppet shows and a variety of special holiday celebrations.

The Starlighting ceremony begins at 5 p.m. and includes a group sing of “Silent Night” and the traditional reading of the Starlighting Poem. That jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus, directs the crowd in the count-down to the lighting of the Star.

The Castle Rock Fire Department sponsors a chili supper from 3-7 p.m. at the station on Perry Street. For more details, visit www.castlerock.org or call the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce at 303-688-4597.

Yes, the holiday season is here, and I hope you all are beginning to feel the spirit.

Randy Reed is mayor of Castle Rock.
