Castle Pines North gets new leadership

The City of Castle Pines North will undergo a change in leadership, according to unofficial election results.

More than 3,600 votes were counted, and Castle Pines North mayoral candidate Jeffrey Huff slightly edged incumbent Maureen Shul, who has served as mayor since the city’s inception in February 2008. Preliminary results from the Douglas County election’s office show Huff notched 1,456 votes to Shul’s 1,186.

Huff said he is looking forward to working with new and returning council members. He celebrated with supporters at La Dolce Vita in Castle Pines North on election night.

“Our volunteers did a great job and the voters responded to our message,” he said.

Huff ran on a platform of limited and unobtrusive government, managed growth and securing a sustainable water solution. He has openly backed The Canyons project, which could add thousands of homes to Castle Pines North, and has promised to encourage residential and business development. He also has pledged to lower property taxes.

Despite the setback, Shul said she plans to “take an activist role” and “get back into the trenches” to make sure Castle Pines North stays on the correct course. She warned that the city has some major challenges ahead of it and urged caution in making sure things are done right, including acquiring renewable water for future use.

Before her term expires in January, Shul wants to continue working on a solid integration plan to fuse city services with those provided by the Castle Pines North Metro District to reduce costs for residents. She congratulated Huff on his win, but said “we are completely different people, polar opposites.” However, Shul said she remains hopeful that he will be a good steward for the citizens.

Shul admitted she had a “liberating feeling” after the election results were posted.

“It was a thrill and honor to be the first mayor, but I’m more prone to be on the activist part of things instead of the figurehead where you have to toe the line,” she said.

The council races for the city’s second and third ward show a fairly large margin of victory for Kim Hoffman, Shelley Hamilton-Bruer, Doug Gilbert and John Ewing.

The uncontested race for Ward 1 in Castle Pines North has seated Jennifer Havercroft and Darwin Horan on the city council, while Mark Shively nabbed the uncontested treasurer’s position with nearly 2,000 votes.

More than 43,500 mail-in votes were tallied countywide, equaling about 23 percent of registered voters within Douglas County.

“The voters responded to our message.” Jeffrey Huff, mayor-elect for Castle Pines North
