Area company lights the way

Two weeks ago, John Hayes, president of Diogen Lighting in Centennial, was getting organized for one of his frequent trips to China. He intended to sell his products for 2010-11 in the company’s large showroom, where retailers such as Ace Hardware and commercial decorators from around the world travel to purchase Diogen’s cutting edge LED products.

“In October, November and January, we see Canada, the U.S. and Europe in Hong Kong — it’s been that way forever, ” Hayes said.

The second segment in Hayes’ travels will be to Mainland China to visit factories where the LED lights are made, he said.

The company manufactures and sells only light-emitting diode, LED, products, said to be low energy consuming and long lasting. In addition to holiday lighting, it produces products such as flood lights and light bulbs.

A number of those Diogen holiday products have been designed over the past 12 to 14 years by Lonnie Hanzon, creative director of the Museum of Outdoor Arts, whom Hayes describes as the most creative person he’s met.

“He sees the world through a lens most people never see,” he said, citing previous LED rope-lighting designs and a table-top carousel that was produced after extensive research of historic carousels by Hanzon. “He translates magic to light and color.”

New products include a series of colored lighted swirls, pretzel shapes, knotted designs and others created by Hanzon that will be mounted on trees, gateways and shrubs at Hudson Gardens and Event Center in Littleton during the first annual Hudson Holiday, a cooperative event being launched by The Museum of Outdoor Arts, which is supplying the decor, and Hudson Gardens — the venue.

Diogen is donating thousands of lights, which would otherwise be far too high-priced for nonprofit budgets, Hanzon says. In exchange, Hanzon will shoot photos and demonstration videos that will serve as marketing tools for Diogen next year.

“Hudson Gardens will show us so well with holiday decorations,” Hayes said.

His company will host its Christmas party at the Inn at Hudson Gardens so employees can enjoy the scene.

Diogen Lighting was formed in 2004 as a division of Holiday Creations Inc. to offer a commercial grade product line for professional applications to designers, electrical engineers and architects, installers and distributors worldwide, according to its Web site. Holiday creations had been designing and selling animated holiday decorations and the addition of the LED products in 2004 expanded the business “beyond our expectations.”

Diogen sells through a catalog, online and in that Hong Kong showroom where large distributors buy products to provide to smaller retailers.

Lighting for homeowners’ Christmas trees and decorating is available and uses standard circuits. Some products will be available at the Hudson Holiday gift shop, according to Hudson Gardens director Rick Meredith. St. Nicks in Littleton stocks the long-lasting LED lighting strings, which cost about $20 each and one can string a number of them together. Twenty sets won’t pull as much electricity as three standard strings.
