Joy Gunderson and Cathy Haug have been neighbors for 16 years and business partners for nine.
The owners of CJ’s Frozen Custard in Lone Tree will be in a Cadillac convertible at the Lone Tree Fourth of July parade. Those are perks that come with being the partade’s grand marshals.
“We are very honored,” Gunderson said.
The two found out about their role in the parade when a member of the Fourth of July Committee, Pat Perlinger came into their shop and asked if they could get-away for an hour or so, and have someone handle customers for them.
“The committee selected the owners of CJ’s because they have been loyal participants at Lone Tree events for a number of years,” Kirstin Bomgardner, Arts, Recreation and Events Coordinator for the city of Lone Tree said.
The business idea started with the two ladies sitting on their porch one day, and Haug, with the custard knowledge and expertise said, “There isn’t any good ice cream around here.”
The rest is history. They ventured to Wisconsin and met with consultants, and now according to Gunderson, they struggle with long lines at their shop. Specifically for the parade and other events, they purchased a concessions trailer, and instead of offering flavors from caramel cashew and cake batter that can be found in their store, they limit the choices to chocolate and vanilla.
“If we give them too many choices, the lines will be too long,” Gunderson said.
As far as what the two friends are wearing to the parade, she said they haven’t decided, but it will probably be red, white and blue.
“We’ve been practicing our waves and smiles though,” she added.
