Douglas County Television, Channel 8 will compete at the regional Emmys Oct. 18 for the Station Excellence award against the three major network television stations in Denver.
DC8 is the first government station in the Denver metro area to be nominated in that category, said station director Jess Stainbrook.
"We're up against all the network affiliates that bring in billions of dollars a year, and here is a station with a $400,000 budget," he said. "Just to get nominated was a big deal."
The Station Excellence award is one of seven Emmy nominations DC8 received for 2003 programming.
The nominations include one for best youth program for "Kid's Talk."
The station also garnered a nomination in the best sports program category for "Lugegirl," featuring 2002 winter Olympian and Highlands Ranch native Courtney Zablocki.
A nomination in the best music category went to the "UFO in Castle Rock" episode of DC8's ongoing "Legends and Oddities" program.
"Wheels of Change: Bike History," is nominated in the best promotional campaign category for programming that's not news.
Free-lance actress Laurel Harris is nominated for her work in "Apparitions and Flies," another "Legends and Oddities" episode.
Finally, David Schler is nominated for "Search for the B-17," another episode from that series.
The Emmy nominations came on the heels of DC8's successful showings at two other award ceremonies for government and cable television stations.
DC8 carried home 11 awards from the 2003 Telly Awards, the cable television industry's equivalent of the Emmys, Stainbrook said.
At the National Association of Telecommunications and Advisors Government Programming Awards, which Stainbrook equated roughly to the Oscars for government television stations, DC8 took home the Impact Award for "Search for the B-17," he said.
Winning that award is something like winning the Best Picture Oscar for a government station, Stainbrook said.
"It's a measure of what show had the biggest impact in its community," he said.
DC8 also won 12 other awards at that competition.
